Course Assignment: Definition of Rhetoric
Context
This academic essay was composed within a required Professional Writing & Rhetoric course, Understanding Rhetoric. I completed this class as a sophomore in order to gain an understanding of rhetoric from the perspective of ancient Greek and Roman rhetoricians, as well as how rhetoric is implemented in the 21st century. The first course assignment was to provide my own definition of rhetoric, which needed to be supported with the definitions from ancient rhetoricians and relevant examples across society. I intended to create a definition that would highlight my growing knowledge of rhetorical study, but also provide necessary improvements based on this close study so far. This essay was originally suited for my professor and other PWR faculty members, but I believe a general audience could benefit from reading it. Rhetoric has become a buzzword frequently utilized by celebrity/political figures as a way to highlight either a manner of speaking or perceived written/verbal intention. So, it becomes important to understand its meaning and how the individual is using it in a specific context.

Rhetorical Strategies
This essay includes elements of logistical understanding and comprehension. It was critical to support my own definition of rhetoric with arguments and direct quotes from ancient Greek and Roman rhetoricians, in order to serve as both a source of credibility to my work and oftentimes a direct opposition to it. I further included example of effective rhetoric (i.e., closely aligning to my interpretation) across various types of media. A speech given at a 2018 March For Our Lives rally represented rhetoric as passionate towards social agenda and change. In addition to elements of logic, I intended to demonstrate my credibility as both a researcher and individual with unique ideas. I had the opportunity within the course to study rhetoric through the lens of several influential rhetoricians, as well as engage in discussions about the term’s aims and limitations in today’s society. With that being said, I was able to share my definition based upon my growing knowledge.

Reflection
I believe this academic essay is successful through the detailed unpacking of my definition of rhetoric. I presented an argument, supported it through the work of rhetoricians, then addressed counterarguments and relevant examples. After reviewing this work again, I can see the value of including additional examples of rhetoric from the 21st century. I provide an example of a political based speech, but varying examples across genres and mediums would strengthen my argument and overall credibility as a Professional Writing & Rhetoric student.
